Robotic Total Joint Replacement

Robotic Total Joint Replacement

Hip and knee arthritis can be a debilitating problem for our patients and can prevent them from leading a healthy and comfortable life. Hip and knee replacement surgeries have proven to be an effective method to rejuvenate the joint for this problem. To optimize the outcome of all our patients needing a joint replacement at the Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey, our team strives to stay at the forefront of evolving surgical techniques. This is why we offer the Stryker Mako System in our hip and knee replacements.

What is the Mako System?

  • A robotic arm-assisted system that helps the surgeon perform extremely accurate, precise and predictable joint replacement surgery. The MAKO is completely controlled by the surgeon and makes no decisions on its own.
  • Provides the capabilities to perform a more minimally invasive procedure
  • Provides intraoperative information for the surgeon (previously unavailable in traditional methods)

What is required for a 'Makoplasty' hip or knee replacement

  • A CT scan of the joint that is used to create a personalized 3D model for both the surgeon and MAKO software utilize to plan the optimal position of implants
  • A surgeon trained to use the MAKO robot

What are the advantages of robotic hip and knee replacement?

  • The robot helps individualize the joint replacement procedure with unmatched detail utilizing the preoperative CT scan that can potentially expedite recovery and optimize outcomes
  • With this precision, can potential minimize risk of surgical error and complications
  • The high degree of accuracy allows for lower risk of future revision
